Free fall into God’s great will

-

Faith isn’t about dipping a toe in to test the waters; neither is it about analyzing possible outcomes to make the best decision. It’s a free fall — letting go of every hesitation, every condition, and wholly receiving the peace and satisfaction of living according to God’s purpose.

The experience of this “free fall” is distinctly human, a strong, inexplicable knowing that locks man in a forever bond with his Creator; it is a unique privilege of human life. Think about it: In life, there are so many relationships or situations that require us to have this free fall. When two people fall in love, there can’t be hesitation or analysis. If a love comes with terms and conditions — someone always calculating, always holding something back — that’s not real love. And the same principle is true when we help a friend, apologize to a brother or sister, or invite someone into our life. Human beings were made in such a way: to be full of conscience, to have an inner being that desires to be fulfilled — to give and to receive unconditionally.

In Paul’s writings to the Ephesians, there are two words that unlock the secret of this unique, beautiful, human experience: God has a will, and behind that will is a pleasure.

Making known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Himself, (Eph. 1:9)

When God made man out of the dust of the earth, it was with such a will and out of such a pleasure. Man, made in the image and likeness of God Himself (Gen. 1:26), has a unique privilege to enjoy this pleasure specifically given to God’s masterpiece, human beings. Whenever we touch something deeply human — falling in love, seeing our child for the first time, raising a family — we taste a little bit of the pleasure out of which we were created. And yet even that is only a shadow: There is a pleasure that goes beyond even the most successful earthen life. No matter how much money you have, how beautiful your wife is or how handsome your husband is, how many degrees you have, how perfect your children are — none of these can compare to the sense of pleasure found in the great will of God Himself.

So much of what we experience on the earth comes with limitations or strings attached, like employees whose relationship ends when the clock hits five. Even our family life and friendships have walls and boundaries. But when God made man, with what freedom He breathed Himself into this piece of clay! With what pleasure He made man after His own image and likeness. With what joy He gave man to eat of the tree of life. With what satisfaction He put His life into man to be mingled and one with him. Where is the calculation in that? And who can explain exactly what God must have been thinking as He made man in such a way? All we can say is, it was according to the good pleasure of His will.

Ephesians tells us that we were predestinated unto sonship through Jesus Christ to Himself (Eph. 1:5). As believers, we are being recovered, or restored, back to where human beings were meant to be in His good pleasure. Jesus Christ cut the way for us to return back to a life of free fall, of receiving the true Life unconditionally so that we can be sons of God — to share in the life, riches, and very breath of God our Father. Today, we can breathe Him in freely. We can simply take in this free air — no extra thoughts, no unnecessary hesitations. We can love and be loved, we can give and receive, we can live without regret. We can free fall into the purpose of our life: to breathe Him in, to breathe Him out, to cooperate with Him, to be fully one with Him, to express Him and represent Him on the earth. The satisfaction of entering into this great will isn’t tied to circumstances, achievements, or fleeting emotions — it is entering into the immutable, unchangeable, eternal, steadfast life and purpose of our beloved Lord Himself (Heb. 6:17;13:8). What a joy, what a privilege, what a pleasure it is to free fall into God’s great will!
